What an L1 interview means
An L1 interview means the first technical round. An L2 interview is the deeper round after it. Here is what each one checks, how long it runs, and who conducts it.
An L1 interview means the first technical round. It checks fundamentals, coding, and whether the resume holds up, usually in 45–60 minutes. An L2 interview is the deeper technical round after that: problem solving at the level of the role, project depth, and often system design. L1 filters the pool. L2 decides who meets the hiring manager. Cointervue can run that L1 as an agentic interview and return a scorecard within 60 seconds.

What an L1 interview covers
- A short introduction and walk-through of recent projects.
- Core concepts for the stack, such as OOP, async I/O, or SQL joins.
- One or two coding problems, often arrays, strings, hash maps, or trees.
- Follow-ups on time and space complexity.
What an L2 interview covers
- A harder problem, or an extension of the L1 problem with new constraints.
- A deep dive into one project: design choices, failures, and what the candidate owned.
- System design or low-level design for mid and senior roles.
- Debugging, code quality, and reasoning about trade-offs.
Running L1 and L2 with an AI interviewer
Because L1 has the most candidates and the most repeatable structure, it is the round teams most often move to an AI interviewer. Cointervue runs that L1 as an agentic interview, with live coding, adaptive follow-ups, and L2-level DSA and system design when the rubric calls for it. Each candidate gets a scorecard within 60 seconds, and only those who pass reach your engineers.
